Bruxism is the unintentional act of clenching, grinding or gnashing your teeth.
Bruxism affects many people, adults and children, and most individuals are unaware that they grind their teeth.
Although some people can unintentionally grind their teeth during the day time, most people with bruxism grind their teeth while they are sleeping.
Symptoms you may experience if you are a bruxer, a person with bruxism, are:
- headaches or migraines
- sensitive teeth
- pain around your TMJ (temporomandibular joint)
- sore facial muscles
- earaches
- trouble with opening and closing your mouth
- worn down, flattened or chipped teeth
- loose or fractured teeth
- broken fillings
- chewed cheek tissue inside your mouth
There are many causes of bruxism and they are not completely agreed upon. Also, some of the causes are not yet known. Psychological issues and dental problems cause bruxism. Psychological issues that cause bruxism are:
- stress caused from being nervous all the time, constantly worrying and holding in your anger and frustrations.
- hostile, restless or competitive natured behavior
- alcohol and drug consumption
Dental problems that cause bruxism are:
- malocclusion
- spaced teeth
- worn teeth
No matter what causes your bruxism, it is imperative to get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to avoid damage to your teeth, mouth and jaw.
