Dental Crowns
A dental crown is used for many reasons. They are most commonly used:
- on a tooth with cracked tooth syndrome
- when a post and core has been placed
- after root canal therapy
- on a large cavity
Cracked Tooth Syndrome can occur when there is a loss of tooth structure associated with tooth decay, chewing on hard objects or food, bruxism, aging, injury or accident.
When there is severe loss of tooth structure and the tooth is severely broken down, inserting a post and core before placing a dental crown may be required. We will shape the root canal to prepare a space for the post. The space that we prepare is used to anchor the post into the root of the tooth. After the post is placed, we fill the tooth with the core. The core is shaped so that is will anchor and retain your dental crown.
You can get a cracked tooth if your previous dentist did not diagnose and treat you properly. Failing to get a crown after root canal therapy can leave your teeth brittle and weak, therefore reducing the strength of your tooth. If you did not have a dental crown put on your tooth after you had a root canal, you may have a cracked tooth now and require a crown.
If you had a large cavity that received a dental filling instead of a dental crown, a crack in your tooth can also occur. Placing a large dental filling, instead of a crown, can leave your tooth without much of its structure, strength and support. As a result, your tooth can crack and a dental crown is required to fix the problem.
When a tooth is cracked, you may experience a recurring toothache. Some of the symptoms you may feel are:
- sharp pains when you bite down
- sensitivity to hot or cold and sweet or sour foods
- you may find yourself chewing on only one side because it hurts when you do chew on the other side
- you have sporadic pain instead of continuous pain as you would with a decay-induced toothache or abscess

Do you need a Crown?
To determine if and why you are in need of a crown, Dr. Dhayni will perform a thorough exam of your teeth and mouth, take x-rays and analyze your bite. Once the fractured tooth has been identified, Dr. Dhayni will devise a treatment plan. Your treatment plan depends on the amount of damage, the position and path of the crack, as well as the type of dental crown used.
If the crack affects the enamel of your tooth, we will remove the affected portion of your tooth and reshape the tooth for a crown. If the crack affects the dentin or pulp chamber, your tooth may require root canal therapy before we can place a dental crown. If your whole tooth cracks, the remaining tooth structure must be removed, a root canal must be performed, along with placing a post & core, followed by your dental crown.
There are porcelain fused to metal crowns and all porcelain crowns.
All porcelain crowns are made entirely of porcelain and look identical to your natural teeth, which eliminates the dark blue line at the edge of many porcelain fused to metal crowns. All porcelain crowns used to be a bit fragile, but with the development of stronger pressed porcelain, today all porcelain crowns are similar to porcelain fused to metal crowns in terms of strength and durability.
Once we determine which dental crown is right for you, we will take impressions of your mouth to use as a model to ensure that your crown fits your teeth and bite accurately. While your are waiting for your crown (1-2 weeks), we often place a temporary crown to prevent bacteria causing infections. Once your crown is made in the laboratory, we will call you to schedule an appointment to apply your dental crown. At your appointment we will make sure the crown fits your mouth and your bite is correct before we cement or bond the dental crown into place. It may take two or more appointments to complete the process of getting your dental crown.
Once your dental crown is placed, the success of it depends of how you care for your crown and the teeth and gums that support your crown. Thoroughly flossing and bushing every time you eat and scheduling a dental exam every 6 months is very important in the success of your dental crown. It may be challenging to keep your dental crown and the surrounding teeth and gums free from plaque and tooth decay, but soon your crown will feel comfortable and be easy to maintain.
