Dental Flossing
Dental flossing is essential to maintaining beautiful teeth and helps in preventing many dental problems such as bad breath, dental cavities, periodontal gum disease and tooth decay.
Dental floss is a small, thin thread like material usually made of nylon, polyethylene or Teflon (depending on the maker of the dental floss). You can find dental floss at many of your local stores featuring flavored or unflavored and waxed or unwaxed brands.
It does not matter what type of dental floss you use, just select one you like and feel comfortable with, and make sure you floss at least once a day. In addition, there is a certain dental flossing technique everyone should follow for dental flossing to be successful.
You want to unwind about 20 inches of dental floss and pinch the floss between your thumb and pointer finger with both hands. Gently slide the dental floss between your teeth, then pull it back and forth in a C-Shape to remove and clean away any plaque and food from around the side of your tooth and under your gum line.
Move onto the next tooth, repeating the same technique, using the next un-used portion of the dental floss. Steadily work your way around your entire mouth, flossing both sides of every one of your teeth.
If your gums bleed, it may be caused by gingivitis, periodontal disease or you may not be flossing properly. If you are flossing properly, the bleeding should stop after a week or so of regular dental flossing.
If you are having problems reaching certain areas in your mouth, special flossing tools have been invented that are F-shaped and Y-Shaped, making it easier and faster to floss your teeth.
When certain dental procedures such as dental bridges and braces have been performed, Superfloss and Floss threaders can be used to make dental flossing much easier.
In addition to daily dental flossing, many dentists highly recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day, using an anti-bacterial mouth wash daily and having semi-annual dental check-ups and cleanings.
