Smoking - how it effects your teeth and gums
Smoking has been linked to various cancers (particularly lung cancer) and heart disease along with causing many dental problems.
Many smokers will experience dental problems such as bad breath, tooth decay, dental cavities, stained teeth, periodontal gum disease and ultimately tooth loss.
If you are a smoker, you should be aware of how smoking causes many dental problems.
When you smoke, the production of saliva is reduced. Less saliva means more bacteria and eventually plaque. In other words, every time you smoke your mouth produces less saliva, and more bacteria and plaque can be found in your mouth.
Many smokers believe brushing their teeth after they smoke will prevent the dental problems associated with smoking. That is not necessarily correct. Eventually smoking will cause many dental problems. In addition, you might be over brushing, which is bad for you teeth too.
If you are a smoker, it is best if you quit smoking for various health reasons and to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. If you believe you have a dental problem because you are a smoker, please contact Dr. Dhayni, DDS to schedule an appointment at (586)-558-8200 or email us at info@warrendentistry.com.
