Scaling and Root Planning
Scaling and Root Planning is a method of treating periodontal gum disease by carefully removing the plaque, tartar and bacteria around and under the gum line.
To determine if you have periodontal gum disease and need scaling and root planning please call Dr. Dhayni, DDS to schedule an appointment at (586)-558-8200.
Our office is located at 30205 Schoenherr Rd, Suite E, Warren, Michigan 48088. Dr. Dhayni, of Warren Dentistry, provides general and cosmetic dental services in the Metro Detroit Michigan Area.
During your appointment, a thorough examination is performed. An instrument called a periodontal probe is used to gently measure the depth of the pockets formed between your teeth and gums. Periodontal gum disease is present when the sulcus is greater than 3 millimeters. In some cases, when the sulcus is less than 3mm deep, gingivitis may be present.
Scaling and root planning may be required when you have gingivitis, but with most cases, regular brushing and flossing along with regular dental visits usually resolves the problem.
If we determine that scaling and root planning is the solution to your periodontal gum disease, a local anesthetic may be given to reduce any discomfort. The scaling part consists of using a hand scaler and an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria around and under the gum line.
Using an ultrasonic scaler combined with a hand scaler has many benefits. An ultrasonic scaler is more efficient is removing plaque, tartar and bacteria and is more comfortable for the patient. A hand scaler is then used to remove any remaining plaque, tartar and bacteria.
The root planning part consists of smoothing the tooth root to help your gums heal. As your gums heal, they will tighten around your teeth making it more difficult for plaque to accumulate along the root surfaces. Depending on the extent of your periodontal gum disease, treatment may require more than one visit. We may prescribe medications to assist in healing and to help control infection or pain.
There are procedures to follow when preventing periodontal gum disease from becoming more serious or recurring after scaling and root planning. You must maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day along with flossing and using mouthwash once a day. If your teeth are sensitive, it is best to use toothpaste made for sensitive teeth for several weeks. If your teeth are still sensitive, we have in-office treatments to help relieve the problem.
It is best to not smoke or use tobacco products. In addition, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly for a check-up and cleaning will help in eliminating periodontal gum disease after scaling and root planning.
